Leaving Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport, the transfer joins the A43 motorway eastbound towards Chambéry and the Alpine valleys of Savoie. The route combines long motorway stretches with increasingly mountainous scenery after Chambéry and Albertville, before continuing on the N90 through the Tarentaise Valley. Depending on traffic conditions, particularly during peak ski weekends, an alternative approach via Grenoble may occasionally be used. Beyond Tignes, the road continues higher into the mountains towards Val d'Isère, following one of the highest major resort roads in the French Alps. The landscape becomes increasingly open and alpine near the resort, particularly during the final kilometres above the tree line.

Val d'Isère sits at the end of the Tarentaise valley at 1850 m. In winter the road stops here — the Col de l'Iseran closes with the first heavy snowfall and doesn't reopen until summer. During ski season there's nowhere further to go, which shapes the whole character of the place: everyone arriving is here to ski, not passing through. The resort has two distinct entry points. La Daille sits at the valley entrance — lower, quieter, with its own gondola up to the main ski area. The main village is further along: the centre, the shops, the après, the bulk of the hotels and chalets spread across the hillside. No access restrictions and no one-way complications. After heavy snowfall the roads slow down, and a handful of chalets sit on steep or narrow tracks that need a careful approach.
