The route from Lyon Part-Dieu or Perrache begins on the A43 motorway towards Chambéry, with long toll-road sections allowing a relatively direct approach into the Alps. Past Bourg-Saint-Maurice, the road climbs through the upper Tarentaise towards Tignes. The final approach becomes noticeably higher and more rugged, with reservoirs, exposed mountain slopes, and long winding sections typical of this route.
