After departure from Grenoble Alpes–Isère Airport, the transfer heads towards Savoie via motorway and dual carriageway sections passing agricultural plains and the lower Alpine foothills. Despite the airport branding, Grenoble city itself is not directly on the route towards Tarentaise, and the airport is geographically closer to Lyon’s side of the region than many travellers expect. The journey then continues through Albertville and along the N90 towards ski-resorts. Beyond Tignes, the road continues higher into the mountains towards Val d'Isère, following one of the highest major resort roads in the French Alps. The landscape becomes increasingly open and alpine near the resort, particularly during the final kilometres above the tree line.

Val d'Isère sits at the end of the Tarentaise valley at 1850 m. In winter the road stops here — the Col de l'Iseran closes with the first heavy snowfall and doesn't reopen until summer. After heavy snowfall the roads slow down, and a handful of chalets sit on steep or narrow tracks that need a careful approach.
