A note on the name: BGY is marketed as "Milan Bergamo" but it's actually in Bergamo — about 45 km northeast of Milan city centre. If your final destination is Milan rather than the Alps, factor in that journey separately.
Val d'Isère sits at the end of the Tarentaise valley at 1850 m. In winter the road stops here — the Col de l'Iseran closes with the first heavy snowfall and doesn't reopen until summer. During ski season there's nowhere further to go, which shapes the whole character of the place: everyone arriving is here to ski, not passing through. The resort has two distinct entry points. La Daille sits at the valley entrance — lower, quieter, with its own gondola up to the main ski area.
