Grenoble to Valmorel: route overview
Your driver picks you up from your Grenoble address and heads north on the motorway towards Chambéry before the route continues east towards Albertville. Near La Léchère, the road leaves the main Tarentaise Valley and climbs towards Valmorel through forested slopes and smaller alpine villages.
The final approach feels quieter than the busier Tarentaise resort roads, with traditional chalet-style architecture appearing as the road approaches the resort centre.
Valmorel was built in the 1970s, which in French ski resort terms usually means tower blocks and stark concrete. Not here. The people behind Valmorel made a deliberate choice to build in traditional Savoyard style — stone facades, wooden cladding, lauze slate roofs, pedestrian streets — and the result is a resort that doesn't look like what it is. It's purpose-built, but it feels lived-in. The village sits at 1400 m in the Tarentaise, reached by a 12 km climb from the Isère valley. Part of the Grand Domaine ski area with Saint-François-Longchamp — 165 km of slopes crossing the Col de la Madeleine, from forests at the bottom to open alpine terrain at the top. The skiing suits intermediates well, with long cruising runs and a natural flow back to the village. Your driver brings you as close to your accommodation as the pedestrian zone allows.
